Percussion is the oldest form of music known to man. From the historic drum of the human heart to the archaic animal pelt drums of our ancestors, the primal beat of the drum stirs something ancient within our souls which can urge us on to dance, groove, or psyche us up to perform extraordinary feats.

The most prehistoric use of rhythm was to send our ancestors into a trance in order to procure a vision or reach a state of poetical flow to deliver stories of tribal lore and tales of life and to communicate over long distances between tribes. Not much has changed over the ages.

Although beats are now heard behind more modern and complicated instruments and covered with sonic production qualities from recording studios they have still maintained the same basic qualities and serve the same basic functions, to put us into a trance and achieve a poetical flow and to communicate over long distances. The poetical flow now takes the form of rap or singing, and the tales of life and “tribal lore” forms the lyrics. Long distance communication involves sending CD’s over the world. But at the beating heart of the matter it’s still the same as it was in the jungle.

So how can you use this information to create beats of your own?

Well keep in mind the basic fact that the beat is used to create a mood and feeling in the listener which will convey the emotion of the musicians.

The art of percussion is the art of manipulating time.

The rhythm of life is a powerful beat! Basically what you are trying to communicate through a beat is little pieces of transmitted life. As such, you have to capture life within you so that you can transmit it out through your music.

The only way to do this is to get out there! Experience life! Get yourself into as many situations as you can. Note how you feel, observe the beating of your heart when you are excited, when you are sad, when you are scared, when you are relaxed and happy.

Great musicians have the ability to create these same feelings in their listeners through their music.

Take your time!

As a percussionist you form the back bone of the song. As such, the soul that you put into your beat is going to radiate throughout the whole song.

If the same vibe is flowing through all the musicians the music will come out flowing and naturally. If there are disparate clashes of ego throughout the band perhaps it is time to regroup. Strongly opposite emotions are like to create clash within the music. Although sometimes this clash is the basis for the greatest music!

Basically the soundest advice is to put soul and life into your beats. These aspects radiate universally throughout the music into peoples hearts no matter what your level of technicality is.

The timpani, which is more commonly known as the kettledrum, are a member of the percussion family. The main body of the drum is typically made of copper and the top that stretches over the copper body to create the part of the drum that is hit with drum sticks, is typically made out of a type of calf skin or plastic. To play this particular drum, there are a specific kind of drum stick that must by used, which is called a timpani mallet or stick. What makes this particular drum unique is the fact that they can be tuned to produce a definite pitch when struck by a timpani stick.

To be more specific in the construction of the timpani, the body on more expensive models is made out of copper. Cheaper models are made out of aluminum or fiberglass. The skin or top of the drum is attached to the drum by a hoop which fits over the skin on the side. This is then held on by another hoop, known as the counterhoop. As mentioned before, the head of the timpani or kettledrum is mad out of calf skin, goat skin or plastic. Before playing, these drums also need to be tuned. If the drum is not tuned properly, then a different pitch will be made each time the drummer strikes the drum with the drum stick.

When the drum is tuned properly, the pitch will be perfect with each strike of the drum stick and a nice sound will be created. The drum is tuned by adjusting the tuning screws around the circumference of the drum. Only when these screws have equal pressure will the right sound be produced. Otherwise, the sound will be off and the drummer will not get the right pitch when they strike the drum.

Choosing to play the drums appears to be a common decision among many younger people. Some even make the mistake that playing the drums is fairly simple. While it can be for some, playing the drum can be difficult too. It depends on what kind of drummer a person decides to be. When starting to learn how to play the timpani, a person might need some practice and some time to become familiar in how to detect the right sound the drum should make. Really, it is like playing many other kinds of instruments. It takes time and practice to learn, but in the end it can be rewarding.

There are many people who will pick this up to play in bands and attempt to make a musical career out of it, but there are also many other people who will take up this kind of drum as a hobby. They like to play it, they find it relaxing and they find it a great release from a long day. It is up to the musician in the end whether they believe they need a new timpani drum or a used one. In many cases, finding used ones can save money and they can work just as well as a new one if it has been taken care of properly.

Drums are one of the most popular of musical instruments. Drummers all over the world have been making the effort to create a drum set that would truly suit the appetite of music lovers all over the world. One of the primary characteristics of a drum is that it can produce indefinite low and high-pitched sounds constantly.

Punk rock was based on anti-establishment rock music genre in the mid 70s, had the punk drums in their arsenal. The punk drummers made a name for them with playing with the shorter version of the rock. The right punk drum kit gear depends on features like playing style, personal penchant, monetary funds, and moving options of the drummer. The hardware part was constituted by the cymbals and tom-tom stands and was considered an integrated part of the base drum kit. Drums and cymbals are considered the breakable part of the collection as it goes through rigorous wear and tear.

One or two electric guitars, an electric bass, a drum kit, the vocals constitute the distinctive punk rock instrumentation. During the mid 1970s people who did not have too much ability in music tried to express themselves through the new form of rock music. The anti institutional based drumming was quick to catch the attention of the public.

Punk drummers like to change their tuning with particular music intervals. This makes the distance between the tuned notes of one drum with the other consistent. As it is not based on any chromatic notes so the punk drummers can have any start point with the punk drums. Although there are many tuning opinions, the bulk of them revolve around the major chords. In addition, the time factor for the whole music length was shorter than the regular rock so the start with the punk drums was fast.

A drum key or a similar kind of device is used to tune the drum set. The tension of a drumhead is changed to tune it. The difference in tuning between same elements of a drum kit and other percussion element is quite significant. Punk drums are no different.

The punk drummer needs to have a detailed knowledge on the drum kit. The collection, which would increase with time, needs to be setup properly so that it does not get broken down in time of performance. Elements like hoops, lugs, and tension rods do have a key role to play in sounding the drum music audible and sweet to the ear. Lugs are metallic pieces that are attached to the side of the drum.

Alternating with the hi-hat cymbals will help you keep the speed but make sure you are not changing the beats. You can create interesting fills with fast music. Listening to good drummers will help you in building your own creative ways. One of the chief ingredients of the punk music is energy, so beating the punk drums with vigor would help in being attuned with the speed of the music.

Native American drums are arguably the most loved Indian instruments among Indigenous and non Native people alike. Drums for hundreds of years have always been at the hub of Native American lifestyle, forming what is the channel of religion and spirituality as well as social gatherings where a pow wow drum is center stage.

Indian leaders in North America history have all used drums in various ways to connect with a higher power known to most as the Great Spirit. To Native people, Indian drums are much more than just decorations or nice musical instruments. American Indian drums are thought to speak to the drummer. Native drums being made in a circle represent the earth and life. The most recognized being hoop drums and shaman drums which are Indian hand drums used in many personal healing and religious ceremonies as well as public ceremonies such as a Native American powwow.

The skin of the animal that is stretched over the ring brings with it unique characteristics of the spirit of the animal and brings a sense of life to the drum when played. Many people think of striking a drum to make a sound, but to Indian drummers and those involved in modern drumming groups and drum circles, the desire is to draw out the sound. The beating drum is compared to the beating of a human heart and is said to represent the heart beat of the earth which is a belief that is classic Native American. Drums in this way become the channel to connect one’s spirit with that of the earth and the Great Spirit through out the history of Native Americans.

Native American drums have a wonderful culture and because they are so important they are used in not only music but art and dance as well. Adding decoration to a drum becomes a very personal artwork to the owner. The Indian drummer becomes an artist and communicates impressions of his inner feelings and beliefs which adorns his drum. Some American Indian tribes use animals to adorn their drums and others use geometric patterns and everything in between. In some tribal Indian cultures the drummer will place something of personal value inside the drum to permanently join himself with his hand drum.

The different Native American pictures that the artwork on the drums depict is often painted with natural earth colors taken from nature. Some are dull and others are bright coming from flowers, roots, berries, bark or herbs that are boiled to release their unique earth tones. Other Native American drums are decorated with iron oxide which is a naturally occurring red rock that can be easily crushed. When mixed with water, it produces a rich orange red dye that is much like paint and is indicative if the surrounding hillsides and rock formations like those of the beautiful Arizona red rock canyons. The region of Sedona is thought to be a special place with spiritual power like the energy created by American Indian drums.

The intent of Native American Education except for those Indian boarding schools that have tried to stamp out Native culture has always involved the sharing of beliefs through music, songs, stories and legends. It is in harmony with these methods of learning that the communication and cultural importance has been found in the use of drums. If you are interested in the spiritual aspects of life as pertain to Indian beliefs, you would get a lot out of using and playing Native American drums.

One of the most popular types of musical instruments in the world is the drum kit. When kids are looking for an instrument to play, they will usually choose between a drum kit and a guitar. This is because the drum kit is one of the legendary instruments, used by some of the greatest musicians in history, including Neil Peart, John Bonham and Ringo Star.

However, it can be hard to buy a drum kit, which can run hundreds of dollars in cost, so the best idea is to find used drum kits. Used drum kits are noticeably cheaper, and despite what is thought, are just as good as brand new drum kits. In fact, for a young kid learning on a set of drums, you are better off to get used drum kits because it then the kids can bang the hell out of them, and you don’t have to worry about losing hundreds or thousands of dollars on an investment because your child doesn’t have a quiet volume for the drums they play, nor how hard they hit them.

Of course, that begs the question, where can you get used drum kits. Well the fact of the matter is that there is one primary place to get them, two if you count the classifieds in the paper but those don’t work all that well. The best place to find used drum kits is pawn shops. You will be able to actually find a wide array of used instruments there, and drum kits are only one of them. You should be able to find cheap kits that will cost no more than a few hundred, or as low as $100.

This is the best route to go initially for the reason stated above, as well as the fact that when your child says they want a drum kit, it does not mean they will always play the drums and the last thing your family needs is a $2,000 drum kit sitting and collecting dust in the garage because your child is bored with it now.

One of the beautiful things about buying the drum kit from a pawn shop, is that if your child does not play the drums anymore because they have moved onto something else, then you can just sell it back to the same pawn shop for a lower price, or another pawn shop at a higher price and earn yourself a profit.

Used drum kits are an excellent way to get your kids involved with drum kits, without having to spend a lot of money. That provides you the assurance that if your child gets bored with the instrument, you are not going to be left with a large cost.

For anyone starting out on the drums, there is no better way to go than getting a used drum kit. Once they are rich and famous, you can get a brand new drum set. Just another way parents can save money when they are encouraging their children to try new things.
