The first steps along the road to becoming a superstar DJ are often the most exciting. Finding the right DJ equipment and getting the most of the budget that you have can strangely enough be exciting in itself. For people that are new to DJing finding the right equipment can be quite difficult. This is because there is such an enormous wealth of options available that can suit all types of budgets there are plenty of decisions to be made.

The level of quality of equipment that you choose to invest in is often relative to your skill levels. So for people that are starting out finding equipment that matches your skill levels and your budget is a challenge. Not least because they are new to the DJ world and by definition do not have much previous experience. I would strongly recommend that people that want to take up DJing save up a considerable budget and then read as much as they possibly can to inform their decisions. So whether you have wanted to be the next Tiesto and play to thousands of clubbers, get funky Morillo style with your mates or get on with some old school cheese then get yourself the best equipment and get cracking.

Music

Picking the right music is by far the most crucial aspect of being a DJ. Long before you need to invest in expensive equipment you need to look into finding music that you like. You should also pick the format in which you want your music carefully. You may opt to use CDs, Vinyl records or computer media files. CDs and computer media files can be mixed in the same way that traditional vinyl records can be if you get the right equipment. This means that these are real viable options for aspiring DJs.

Playing Devices

It goes without saying that you are going to need a piece of equipment to play your music. In most cases a DJ will have a couple of devices that they use together to enable them to change tracks seamlessly. Typically you are likely to be familiar with DJs that use two turntables. One of the turntables plays the music live whilst the other is used to cue up music in preparation for the other tracks to be played. The DJ will usually listen to the second track through headphones and try and match the beats so that they can produce seamless links between tracks. There are devices that can do this between CDs and also between computer media tracks. These devices often have an external hardware that replicates a vinyl turntable and can be manipulated in a similar way.

Headphones

Headphones are one of the most important pieces of kit for a DJ. A good set of headphones can make mixing tracks much easier. The best types of headphones are those that do not let in outside sound (known as ambient sound). Headphones must therefore be external as in ear headphones don’t block out sound very well. A good set of headphones will cost you between 80 pounds and 150 pounds but they are also likely to last a long time so will be worth the investment.

With the computer being able to do so many composites’ in the new era you might wonder should you play live or should you just synthesize every sound needed in the comfort of your own home? Many wonder this every day, with the computer you can make virtually any instrument sound with ease and have them play at the same time. If you are considering this option, think about the things you can do either way. Playing live means that you can see your audience, but you can’t so much with a computer.

MIDI files are one of the types that are used to simulate the sounds of instruments. As time has progressed, the sounds have become less electronic sounding and more realistic. The MIDI format is primarily used on Mac Pc’s. They utilize plug ins that are already existent, plus you can always download more of them. This makes them very appealing to those who just seek to make music using a computer rather then going live.

Virtual Sound Technology is another format that can be used to create live sounds of instruments. The wide variety of instrumentations, takes and then loops sounds. Electronic effects can be used in many programs available, There is also a variety that can be added Via the Internet. Virtual Sound Technology and MIDI files both convert the files to digital sound. This results is a wide variety for the person utilizing this feature to arrange sounds and ways the music is produced without needing new sounds.

The question then becomes weather or not to move into a recording studio or to produce the label using only the electronic versions. While the electronic versions keep all the same notes and length they also produce the same effect every time. With a live performance this is not always the case, music has to be adjusted based on the instruments used and the notes that are played.

Resonance is one of the main problems however to using a computer to make the music files. Once the sounds are digitalized the sounds no longer carry the waves that an instrument makes in Resonance waves. Resonance waves are vibrations carried from various instruments from the chimes, to even a drum. If you are looking for a little bump to it then you don’t want to digitalize and you will want to use the live performance idea not the production of computer sound files.

Another important choice in this department is choosing the right File to fit the sound you want to make. There are several types of files that can emulate an instrument but if you choose the wrong one fans and even record labels can tell that your sounds are made from a computer rather then a live band. If you are going for techno or electronic music then any file type will work. If, however, you want a more realistic sound you will need to listen to many files and choose the ones that fit what you want them to do.

If you don’t find the ones that you want right away you can always check for upgrades and check for new add-ons, this will greatly increase the chances that you will find what you are looking for. Selecting the right file may require more time then you initially think because of the effects and sounds your looking for.

The main thing to think about is this is your music you can have it play any way you want it to. Selecting the right music for what you want is important. After you have selected the type of music you want played, you will want to add them all together; this can add the full flavor of the music. If it plays how you think it should then you can then keep the file. If, however, it’s not the way you want then you might need to tweak it some and change some of the arrangements of files, or you might need to change a file or two to add the sounds you want.

Woofer is commonly known for its loudspeaker driver, designed to produce low frequency sounds. It can produce sounds ranging from around 40 hertz up to about a kilohertz or even higher. The name is derived from a dog bark, woof in contrast with tweeter. It is a name given to the speakers designed to reproduce high frequency sounds.

The most common design of a woofer is the electrodynamic driver. These use a cone, driven by a voice coil surrounded by a magnetic field. The combination of both the voice coil and the magnet forms a linear electric motor.

And when current flows through the voice coil, the coil then moves in relation to the frame, causing the coil to push or pull on the driver cone in a piston like way. The voice coil is attached to the back of the speaker cone with the help of an adhesive. The resulting motion of the cone creates sound waves as it moves in and out.

Designing and manufacturing a woofer is a challenging task. While designing a woofer you have to keep in mind the following points. Controlling the motion of the cone so the electrical signal to the woofer voice coil is dependably reproduced by the sound waves produced by the cone motion. Controlling the electrical impedance, which is the measure of opposition to a sinusoidal alternating current, is a challenging task. This is done so that the use of economic electronic amplifier can be made possible.

A good woofer design requires an effective conversion of low frequency amplifier signal to mechanical air movement with high commitment and maximum efficiency. It is complicated with the necessity of using a loudspeaker enclosure to couple the cone motion to the air.

The cone materials have its advantages and disadvantages. The three common high quality properties that designers look for in cones are light weight, stiffness and lack of coloration. Exotic materials like Kevlar and magnesium are light and stiff, but they can have ringing problems, depending on their fabrication and design. Materials like paper, which also includes the coated paper cones, and various other polymers will generally ring less than metal diaphragms, but can be heavier and not as stiff.

But, how the frame is design? The frame or the basket is the structure, which holds the cone, voice coil and the magnet in the power alignment. The voice coil gap is quite narrow, therefore it is important to prevent rubbing of the voice coil against the magnet structure in the gap and also to avoid extraneous motions.

There are two types of metal frames that are stamped and cast. Stamped baskets usually made of steel is a lower cost option. And the disadvantage of this frame is that the basket may bend if the speakers are on higher volumes. Cast baskets are more expensive but they are more rigid in all directions. Cast baskets have better damping, can have more intricate shapes, and are therefore usually the preferred for higher quality. Woofers designed for public address and instrument applications are similar to that of the structure of a home audio woofer.

If you are planning to buy an MP3 or MP4 player, you should take into account its memory capacity, supported formats, accessories and battery. Apple, Sony, Microsoft, Samsung, Philips and several other brands are available. Need help choosing the right product? This guide can assist you in picking the best player suited to your needs.

What are MP3 and MP4 players?

MP3 and MP4 players are digital devices that let you take your music and videos with you, wherever you go. You can transfer files from your computer to the player and enjoy them anywhere using headphones or portable speakers and the built-in screen. Use MP3 players to play music and MP4 players to view photos and play videos. These players are convenient to own and easy to use. They provide entertainment for hours on end.

What are the different types of MP3 and MP4 players available for sale?

You can buy various types of MP3 players like flash memory players and hard disk drive players. You have a large selection of MP4 players to choose from as well, including basic models, MP4 players with digital cameras, HDD media players, DivX MP4 players and TV MP4 players.

How many songs and images can a player store?

The number of songs you can store on a player depends upon the memory space available. The memory capacity of an MP3 player ranges from 256 MB to 160 GB. MP4 players have a much higher memory capacity with ranges of 20 GB to 100 GB and above. A 1 GB player can store more than 350 songs and 300 images. Since MP4 players playback video, they have more memory, as videos consume much more space. MP4 players use hard disks for better storage capacity. If you have to store hours of video, opt for an MP4 player with 20 GB of storage, as a minimum. Memory card slots allow you to expand the memory space available in MP3 and MP4 players, so check for them before making your final selection.

What formats do these players support?

Before buying an MP3 or an MP4 player, make sure that it plays the formats you want. An MP3 player supports other formats like AAC (the default format used by iPods), WMA (Microsofts technology), and Atrac (Sonys audio compression technology). MP4 players can play more file formats than MP3 players. The basic MP4 player can support MP4, MP2, MP1, DivX, AVI and WMV video files. They also support audio formats like MP3, WMA and Ogg Vorbis.

What features do MP4 and MP3 players have?

MP4 players come with built-in screens and recording features. Theses players usually include an MP4 conversion software and instructions on how to best encode video content. High-end MP4 players can record audio directly to the memory from an in-built FM radio tuner, line-input or microphone. For added convenience, some players feature an in-built microphone. You can also record TV shows directly from your television and output your saved data to your TV.

Many MP3 players feature backlit screens for better viewing, radios and Wi-Fi capabilities. Wi-Fi enabled MP3 and MP4 players let you download songs and videos from the Internet. Most current models support high-speed USB 2.0 transfer and a few models support FireWire.

Which player is best for you?

If you will use your player only for short durations, then choose a small, compact and lightweight one. Looking for a player to store your entire music collection? Go for players with 30 GB of memory or more. If you intend to use your player on long trips, select among models with lengthy playback times. If you are looking for an MP3 player for sports or working out, you will need an ultra-compact player like the iPod Shuffle or a small flash memory player that clips onto your clothes. Get a compact flash-based player with a pair of noise-canceling headphones if you travel by bus or train.

What accessories are available for MP3 and MP4 players?

There are many accessories available for MP3 and MP4 players. Here is a look at some in detail.

Headphones:

Most Portable Audio or MP3 and MP4 players come with earphones. If you listen to music at work, clip on or wrap around headphones might be more comfortable. Noise-cancellation headphones provide clear sound when your travel. Buy a headphone splitter to share music with a friend.

External Speakers and Docking Stations:

There is a wide range of external speakers available for MP3 and MP4 players. Most of these speakers include docking stations that will recharge your player.

Travel Speakers:

Carry travel speakers with you when you picnic or hit the beach with your friends and family. These speakers use rechargeable batteries.

FM Transmitters:

FM transmitters allow you to transmit songs stored on your player through any radio.

Batteries:

Almost all MP3 and MP4 music devices use a rechargeable battery. You can recharge a player by connecting it to your computer.

AC Adapters:

Many MP3 and MP4 players come with a standard AC adapter to quickly recharge your music device.

Cases and Skins:

Protect your music player from scratches with cases and skins. They come in many different designs and colors, so choose your favorites to personalize your player.

Cradles:

Cradles hold MP3/MP4 players in your vehicle while you drive.

Armbands:

Strap your music player on your arm with an armband. Get one if you plan on exercising with your player often.

Cassette Adapters:

Cassette adapters allow you to play MP3 songs from your portable music player in your vehicles cassette deck.

For many decades, audiophiles, archivists and other tape collectors have wrestled with the plague of sticky shed syndrome deterioration of magnetic tapes. Sticky shed syndrome began appearing in magnetic tapes in the mid 1970s.

When carbon black back coated magnetic tapes were taken out of storage and playback attempted, one often found a gooey substance, called sticky shed, on the oxide surface of the tapes. This sticky material caused squealing, binding, blocking, poor playback quality and other problems. The sticky shed debris also collected on the tape machines heads, guides and posts. In some severe cases these contaminated tapes could not be unwound because the gooey substance acted as a blocking adhesive, sticking together the wound tape layers.

Many believed that the sticky shed phenomenon was the hydrolysis by-product of the irreversible deterioration of only the oxide binder chemical. Most efforts to restore sticky shed contaminated tapes focused solely on the oxide surface to enable playback and migration of content to digital media, often causing the loss of the tape. None of these efforts have been successful in eliminating sticky shed contamination.

Independent forensic laboratory analyses of the chemistry of magnetic tapes have revealed that the major cause of sticky shed contamination is the deterioration of the tapes carbon black back coating. The carbon black back coating binder has been found to make up most, if not all, of the gooey substance found on the oxide surface of contaminated tapes and on the tape heads, guides, etc.

Carbon black back coating is made of carbon black particles combined with polyurethane, an organic binder chemical. Tape manufacturers began adding carbon black back coating to magnetic tapes in the early 1970s. It was intended to reduce static and friction. Before the introduction of carbon black back coating, some tapes used a
plastic back coating that did not contain carbon black and few, if any, developed sticky shed syndrome.

Carbon black coating has proven itself to be a ticking time bomb causing tape deterioration. Carbon is the most variable, flexible, versatile, and often unstable of all the chemical elements. Carbon will change from one substance compound into another any time it gets the chemical and environmental chance to do so.

Carbon black plus its binder chemical provides the chemical structure, breeding ground, and living organic micro universe within which the carbon black coating changes into the unwanted gooey sticky shed material. The carbon black back coating is very hygroscopic, acting like a moisture sponge, with an addictive appetite for moisture.

In the presence of moisture, carbon black, along with its organic binder chemical, is also a seed-bed for the growth of mold and fungus. When the tapes carbon black binder coating is exposed to moisture, the moisture, combined with its environmental heat energy, starts up, sustains, and accelerates hydrolysis. Hydrolysis produces the by-products of carboxyl acid, alcohol, polymer fragments, carbon particles, mold, and fungus. These chemicals, aided by the direct mechanical contact of the carbon black back coating with the oxide surface, attacks the oxide coating causing major hydrolysis reactions. Some of this hydrolysis chemical activity also injects itself into the base film upon which it is coated.

By correctly removing the deteriorated carbon black coating from both sides of the tape and proper storage, sticky shed syndrome is eliminated and the tape will resume a long archival functional life span and produce playback sonic qualities essentially as good as originally recorded.

As time goes on, new technology comes along to supplant the old. At one point in history, the vinyl record was the most popular way to play music, but eventually that was supplanted by the cassette tape. The cassette tape was eventually overtaken by the CD, and now the CD is being overtaken by the mp3.

However, as new technology comes along, many people choose not to latch onto it, preferring to hang onto the old methods of listening to music for nostalgia sake. As a result, it is common for many music aficionados to try and find the outdated forms of music playback.

As a result, things like used CDs can still hold a niche popularity for a variety of collectors because they beckon back to a time that may have been simpler. While for many others, it is simply a case of wanting to use a form of musical playback that they consider to be superior to newer methods.

As odd as it may seem now, there are those out there who feel the old vinyl records have a better sound than even the digital mp3s we have come to rely on so much these days.

As time goes on and collectors begin to look for forgotten CDs, they check out a variety of places that may sell used CDs. These obviously include pawn shops which carry vast collections of CDs that people have pawned as they made their way into the mp3 and iPod revolution that has taken over the music industry in the 21st century.

Pawn shops are a cornucopia of used CDs that will delight any music lover who wants to go back to the days of Seinfeld and Bill Clinton.

Another great place to check out for used CDs is second-hand shops, where people will often give away their CDs because they have decided to start downloading their music, either for free or legally.

As new technology comes along, it is inevitable that the old forms of technology, whether it be cassette players or CDs, will eventually fade away to the scrap heap. This is not to say they are inferior ways of listening to music, but they are simply out dated when compared to the new forms of music playback that now exist. The CD is great, but many prefer to carry thousands of songs around with them in their iPod, rather than two CDs of a few songs they like.

However, if you want to go back to the days of your youth, you can listen to used CDs that you are able to pick up in a variety of locations around your city, from second hand shops and garage sales to pawn shops and antique collectable stores.

If you are looking to get used CDs for whatever reason, take heart in the fact that so many people are getting rid of them, which makes them, for the first time ever, incredibly cheap.
Who said new technology had to be a bad thing?

Recording technology has advanced far beyond magnetic tape on large reels and recording everything live in the studio. New developments are happening all the time, both within the recording industry itself and with the technology used in recording. This is making more different sorts of recordings and recording setups possible.

Recording has actually gotten simpler and cheaper with each passing year. No longer does the would-be recording engineer or self producing artist need to invest thousands upon thousands in equipment. Newer recording equipment offers more capabilities and versatility with a lower price tag.

The biggest news in the field is of course digital recording technologies. Everything can be recorded digitally, right off of the board. Digital recording makes for a clearer, crisper sound and a wider frequency range.

New digital technology brings with it new, more compact mixing consoles. Great for bedroom studios and the like where space is at a premium, many of these boards have all the capabilities of a larger analog based board and can even handle everything without the use of an external computer or added software. This streamlines the entire process of recording and allows for much easier remote recordings, such as live shows and field recordings.

Along with these advances in recording is the near omnipresence of electronic musical instruments (think of samplers and sequencers, for instance), allowing entirely new kinds of sounds to be produced. That perfect sound once unattainable now is within reach and almost anyone can be their own arranger thanks to these new technologies.

Other musical equipment has kept pace. Amps, microphones and the like are being seen in constantly improving models. All in one amplifier/microphone combos are available, which can record as you play and are ideal for capturing a live performance without the interference of crowd noise, poor microphone placement, etc.

Due to the very different acoustics of studios versus live music venues, equipment can be divided into those that are better suited for one purpose than the other. Studio settings call for reducing resonance; in live recording, you’ll want just the opposite, for instance. Look for this separation of purposes to be a growing part of the recording equipment market, as well as that of musical equipment in general.

When putting together your own recording studio, consider these new technologies and how you can best use them for your specific purposes. You’ll want to take advantage of anything and everything that help you achieve that perfect sound, and today’s new digital recording equipment can get you there.

If you are interested in becoming a Disc Jockey (DJ) you have come to the right place. To become a DJ you have got to first learn the art of mixing. You have to be well versed with the rhythm and remixing. But before you start you need to own a set of DJ equipment, which includes turntables, headphones, mixer and a good set of speakers.

These DJ equipments are costly and therefore it is important to do a thorough research before purchasing them. The following details the basic equipment that you need before starting your career as a DJ.

A turntable is generally a rotating platform maintaining a constant speed motor driven phonograph or a gramophone. This DJ equipment is used to mix and scratch records. It has given rise to the term turntabilism and has led to professional CD players with the same capability. When you are looking forward to buying a turntable make sure you consider the features, which include the following.

- Direct drive to give you better control over how fast the record will start and stop.

- Tone arm feature gives you the option to adjust your tone. The tone arm up and down in combination along with the anti-skate mechanism can produce a proper tone arm balance.

- Anti-shake feature gives the tone arm just enough balance as not to skip when playing.

- Make sure your tone arm has a counterweight feature, which is used to give the proper balance for the tone arm itself so as to not damage the needle while playing your vinyl.

- The pitch control is needed because the 33 and 45 RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute) settings are not enough. Your pitch control should be on the right hand side and have a positive and negative range of 896.

Another important part of DJ equipment to make it a complete system is a good set of speakers. You need to buy quality speakers, but you need to know exactly what you are looking for. Some of the important features that you need to look into while buying this DJ equipment is the watts, dimension of the speakers, quality of the speaker box itself, and magnet size. The most important thing to do while buying speakers is you need to hear how it sounds with a quality mix tape.

Another DJ equipment that you cannot do without is the DJ mixer. It is a full-featured DJ and beat mixing system to create your own custom DJ style music. They can include both audio and even video player with two independent decks and professional sound quality. It can sync beat and has pitch control. It has 2 to 6 stereo channels for connecting and mixing audio sources. Each channel has a phono input with RIAA equalization for turntables. It also has one or two lines level input options for other sources such as CD players and laptop.

Besides that it has 2 or 3 microphone inputs, peak meters to aid matching levels between channels and monitor the signal for clipping. It also has a headphone jack plugs and a headphone volume control.

Besides the above-mentioned DJ equipment, there are other software programs that can support the best DJ solutions with pro quality. They can add to your DJ equipment and give extra advantage to your DJ work. It can enhance your creativity in creating music on your PC as well.

Music composers of the latest generation are no longer limited to just a keyboard, mixer, or specialty synthesizer to compose. Today a variety of gears is available in the market for composers to compose and program their music piece. However, as a composer of music one should remember that the music gear does not produce the music, you do.

The latest music gear for composers that are available on the market are friendlier than ever and easier to play. In modern keyboards the composer will find hundreds, even thousands of instruments all tweaked and ready for their specific applications. The music composer that is looking for drum beats can easily choose from a variety of Techno, rhythm and blues, Hip Hop, Country, Orchestral. They are all stored there in the sound bank ready on the press of GO.

Earlier in the days when the musicians used midi, they had to work very hard to get these sounds. Today the modern sound gears not only make the work easier but also produce great sound quality. Today, the gears are quieter and possess no hisses and hums. At the same time they usually have good support online with free patches and even operating systems which can be easily downloaded by the musician. The latest music gear is more reliable than the older gear.

For the first time, musicians can stop worrying about power supplies dying and battery backed Ram failing. Most manufacturers now produce gears that go through the process of more than two decades of research and development. The effort really shows.

However, composers should remember that high end gears require high end backup gear. Those musicians who are tight on the budget should keep that in mind. If you have invested in an expensive condenser microphone you cannot get away with a low quality pre-amp.

However, the recent few years have brought such tremendous advances to sound quality that the heavy line between pro gear and home gear is getting thinner. To get to higher sound quality you must have great preamps, converters, monitors, good microphones and an excellent sounding room.

As a music composer you can also face input output disasters with your music gear that can leave you irritated. You can avoid all these by just knowing what you have and where you actually are having the problem.

The next step is to identify your goals. If you have a two input soundcard and want to record the whole band where everyone has a track,. as a music composer you may think it is not possible. You go ahead and invest in a twenty-four track mixer only to realize that it too has only two inputs only.

The point is to simply observe what you are paying for and know your gears well. You may have a keyboard with a sampler in-built. Be aware of the features that your gears have.

Music gear is not only expensive to buy but also expensive to maintain. A full maintaince job can lead to the restoration of the gear. The first step in music gear repair lies in identifying the area of discrepancy. If you are not aware of the area you can land up in trouble by probably spoiling the gear.

Music gear is sensitive to even slight changes in the weather. It is always advisable to keep the gear in a protective environment. When not in use try to keep it wrapped inside a box with moisture absorbents. If the humidity or the moisture content in the air affects the gear, the sound quality may start distorting or sometimes even disturbing the entire signal flow.

Various gears are found faulty due to various reasons. Thus, it is necessary to know the reason for the fault. While repairing keep a note of the power related issue. Repairs and upgrades to the power supply and attention to power and ground distribution can reduce power-related noise without significantly altering desirable sonic characteristics.

For music gear like keyboards and synthesizers, the musician can face problems like low-output after sometime or power failure. But with an instrument like a guitar whether acoustic or electric repairing can really be a long task. However, the trick lies in identifying the area that needs repair.

If you are dealing with a guitar you can start with the guitar neck. That is because the guitar neck over time will warp because of the constant string tension. If your guitar has become harder to fret it may be a sign the neck needs adjustment. To check for warping remove the guitar strings from the bridge, not the tuning keys, this way you can put them back on without restringing. To be sure take a yardstick and lay it edgewise across the neck. It should lie evenly across the frets. If not, then the neck needs adjustment. To adjust your guitar neck you need to tighten the truss rod by turning the nut clockwise. However, do not over tighten it as you can break the neck. After all, we are trying to avoid costly repairs not create them.

Secondly, you will often hear a “buzz” in your guitar caused by loose frets. To check for loose frets press the ends of each fret with the tip of your finger to check for movement. To repair loose frets, first determine which end is loose. Place your guitar on its side and hold down the loose fret. Use one drop of super glue or similar product and let it run down between the fret and the fingerboard holding the fret down while it dries. Again, this is not a hard procedure but if you are careless you will cause more damage than what you had to begin with. Be very careful while performing this adjustment. If you raise the string height too much you may change the intonation of your gear. If the string is to low it will cause a fret buzz.
